CAF SUPERCUP

It was a close run thing for current CAF Champions League holders TP Mazembe on Saturday as opponents FUR Rabat of Morocco showed no respect for their lofty rivals and very nearly became the 1st side from the Confederations Cup to claim the CAF Supercup.

Both coaches stuck to the tried and tested in their respective starting line-ups with the exception maybe of Zambian Given Singuluma who started from the bench. Singuluma had scored a brace in the 1st leg of the final.

The goalless first period was cut and thrust from both teams, however the second half was much more of a contest with both sides intent on scoring. FUS will count themselves unlucky to see two great chances saved by on-form veteran Robert Kidiaba in goal for TP.

His 1st save was a reflex right hander to deny Anwar Adbelmalki's header from a El Bakkali free kick. Moments later a close range effort from Striker Rachid Rokki found Kidiaba floating across to his left in perfect position.

The best chances on the day for TP fell unsurprisingly to Alain Kaluyituka, who for once seemed to have left his classy touch at home.

0 - 0 at halftime became 0 - 0 after 90 minutes and with CAF already having decided to scrap extra time - penalties.

FUS were up 1st and scored 1st too, but missed their second. Fortunately for the Moroccans, Kalaba missed kick 4 and it was all to play for again.
Substitute El Grib then had his penaty (the 11th for FUS) saved by Kidiaba, who then dusted himself of to slot home the decider and with his customary bottom hopping celebration it was CAF trophy number seven for the side from the DRC.

Both teams have byes in the preliminay round of their respective competitions this year, but will be back in African action in March.
